A native of Northeast Ohio, Christy began coaching volleyball in 1991 at the age of 20. She was introduced to club volleyball when she moved to the Chicago-Metro area in 1995 (Bottom Line Volleyball, Aurora IL) and was named the Head Volleyball Coach for Mooseheart High School (Batavia, IL). While at Mooseheart, Christy led her team to a 3rd place finish in the Indian Trail Conference and their first invitation to the state playoffs in school history. After taking time off to raise her busy sons, Christy re-entered the coaching world in 2012 when her family relocated to Granville County, NC. She was the Head Coach at South Granville from 2013-2016, earning 4 conference titles, 4 conference tournament titles, was the 2014 2A NCHSAA Volleyball State Runner-Up, the 2015 2A NCHSAA Volleyball State Champion, the 2013 Coach of the Year for the Northern Carolina Conference, and the 2015 Coach of the Year for the State of North Carolina. During this same time, Christy met Michael Hodge, the president and founder of Jammers Volleyball Club. Together they collaborated with the goal to bring a quality club experience to Granville County, and with that vision, Jammers SG was born. Christy ran Jammers SG successfully from 2012-2018. During those 6 years, Christy’s Jammers SG teams had championship finishes at Queen City Classic, Winter Bump, Carolina Region East/West Championships, a top 3 finish at Capitol Hill Classic, and a top 9 finish at Big South Classic National Qualifier. She also ran a beach volleyball program in the summer. Each year, many of her beach players earned bids that qualified them to play in the USAV Beach National Championships. In 2018, Christy was hired as the Director of Volleyball for Carolina Explosion Volleyball, a new club in Wake Forest, NC. In her two years at Carolina Explosion, the club grew from 7 teams to 11 teams. In those 2 seasons, her teams won titles at Carolina Kick-Off, Winter Bump, Queen City, K2 Presidents Day Bash, East/West Championships for the Carolina Region, and a second-place finish at Capitol Hill Classic. As part of Carolina Explosion, she also created and developed a successful beach and youth program that introduced nearly 200 young players to the game of volleyball.
Why I coach: “For me, coaching is about building relationships and being invested in the kids. Volleyball is such a great teacher of life lessons and playing a small part in a player’s journey is a special responsibility for me.” “Oh and winning, winning is nice too.”
She is an alumna of St. John’s University where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. In 1992, she joined the New York City Police Department, earning several awards and recognitions, and retired as a 2nd-grade detective. During her tenure, she successfully completed the Special Operations Specialized Training School and became a member of the NYPD’s Elite Emergency Service Unit. After several years on patrol, she was appointed to the position of Fiscal Officer, overseeing the daily fiscal operations of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit.
As a resident of Wake Forest, she quickly became involved in her community. She presently volunteers with the Wake Forest Dream League and serves as a volunteer board member for the Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry. During her free time, she enjoys singing, running, and spending time with her husband, Dennis, and daughter, Nia.
What inspired you to join Legacy? "l feel it is always important to give back, and when Dennis and Christy conversed about Legacy, I knew it would be a safe haven for some beyond the volleyball court. Oh, the joy, to see the players come in and/or not want to leave. The passion Christy displays for each, and every player is unmatched. I am blessed to be a part of the Legacy Family and blessed to assist in any way possible."
This diverse background enables her to elevate the club's communication strategies, ensuring that every player and parent feels informed, valued, and empowered in their journey with Carolina Legacy Volleyball Club.
Christina's family shares a love for sports and community involvement. Her husband participates as both a hockey player and coach, while their son proudly guards the net for the Junior Canes. Their daughter is excited to begin her second club season as a middle blocker at Legacy. When Christina isn't showcasing her artistic talents as a professional face painter, she can be found immersed in a captivating book or volunteering for the Disaster Action Team with Red Cross.
Why youth sports? “I didn’t grow up playing youth sports. My husband did, and it was important to him that our kids were part of a team from a young age. As I’ve watched my children play and grow, I am amazed at the many ways youth sports positively impact the life of a child. If you have a healthy relationship with the sport and are part of an organization that puts athletes first, the life lessons your child will learn are invaluable.”
